WE ARE CERTIFIED FIREARMS INSTRUCTORS BY THE ILLINOIS LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING AND STANDARDS BOARD (ILETSB), CERTIFIED BY THE ILLINOIS STATE POLICE TO TEACH CONCEALED CARRY, AND A CERTIFIED NRA INSTRUCTOR. WE HAVE BEEN TEACHING CONCEALED CARRY SINCE OCTOBER OF 2013, WHEN CONCEALED CARRY WAS FIRST INTRODUCED IN ILLINOIS. WHEN YOU TRAIN WITH US, IT WILL BE GUARANTEED CERTIFIED TRAINING WHICH THE STATE and MANY OTHER STATES RECOGNIZE FOR YOUR CONCEALED CARRY LICENSE. Make sure you check the Illinois State Police website to verify qualified instructors before signing up for any training, no matter whom you decide to train with.
We teach a Basic Pistol and Concealed Carry Course, the mandatory Concealed Carry Re-Certification Course for those with CCLs about to expire, and an Advanced Course for those who want to enhance their skill set.
IF YOU TAKE THE TWO-DAY COURSE WITH US, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO CARRY IN 29 STATES as of Jan 2022 (Per USCCA). (You will need to know the laws of each State you intend to carry.) There are easy ways to extend that number of states, and we will tell you how to do so during the training.
We keep the atmosphere light and conducive to adult learning. We have fun while we teach and try to make everyone feel like they are a part of a team. No matter your expertise level, you will succeed and have fun doing so.
Don't be afraid that you won't be able to keep up with the rest of the class....we've had several "newbies" (several had never shot a pistol before coming to the training-TRUE STORY) come in and by day 2, outshoot many of the seasoned shooters. Teaching a newbie is easier because they haven't learned many bad habits. We teach the style that the top shooters in the world use, including the military's elite forces. It has proven itself in time to be the most effective and easiest to acclimate to for efficient shooting. We teach the basics on Day 1 and continue from there. We guarantee that we can make you a better shooter in just a few hours. We've had several hundred students over the last many years, and everyone, with the exception of one due to a medical issue, has passed the state's mandatory qualification without fudging on any of it. We have supreme confidence that we can make an efficient shooter out of anyone in a short period of time. It's fun for us to see the improvement in a very short time. We keep it simple and easy to understand.
We don't have the fanciest website, but you can train with us with the confidence of knowing that you are being trained by professionals who have had the experience and the training in gun handling and tactics, gun laws, and countless hours in the courtroom. We don't just turn on a video and have you watch it. We are hands-on and will teach you step-by-step how to properly hold, stand, and shoot a handgun. We will make sure you understand your rights as a gun owner and make sure you know exactly when you can and cannot pull the trigger if God forbid you ever have to. During our past classes, we have improved several of our students' shooting skills from the novice to the more skilled. Many years of hands-on experience in our professions have given us a real-life perspective of what to expect in the real world. In the real world, we have both had guns pointed at us and have both been shot at. We have carried concealed for years. We will share these perspectives with our students and will gladly give them the knowledge we have acquired through those experiences and incidents. We have testified in open court and have learned and reviewed case law. We take great pride in improving our student's gun handling and shooting skills and guarantee you will know your rights and the laws for concealed carry. When you get done training with us, you will have the confidence to be a responsible gun owner and concealed carry licensee going forward.
Mike Swemline (Cambridge) and Ed Shamblin have a combined 40+ years of law enforcement experience. Mike was an active member of a multi-jurisdictional SWAT Team. Mike is a Chief (he was a Sergeant when we started) with his police department. Mike has been teaching concealed carry in Illinois since its inception (October 2013). Mike spent 6 years in the National Guard and has 29+ years of law enforcement experience, with 24 years as a firearms instructor for his department and 18 years on the SWAT team. Mike is certified by the NRA as an instructor for Certified Pistol and is a life member of the NRA. He has a bachelor's degree in criminology and is a certified law enforcement trainer in several areas of law enforcement. Mike has worked with the Secret Service doing pre-arrival work and providing security for a Speaker of the House.
Chad Jewett worked for 10 years with the Illinois State Police and is a former police officer with the Colona Police Department. He has also spent the past 10 years working for several firearms manufacturers and retailers. He is currently serving as the President of a chain of firearm retailers across the Midwest. Chad is certified by the NRA as a Pistol instructor and Range Safety Officer. Chad may be helping from time to time assisting with teaching classes.
Shane retired from teaching at the end of 2023 but may be available occasionally to assist in teaching classes when needed. Shane has 34+ years of law enforcement experience with 25 years on the SWAT team. He has 29+ years as a firearms instructor for his first department, the SWAT team, and now with his current position. He has worked with the DEA and has Homeland Security training. He worked for 3 years doing undercover work buying drugs and guns in a task force under the state of Illinois' guidance. He has worked with the Secret Service providing inner and outer layer security for a President, a Governor, and a Speaker of the House. He has attended several advanced shooting and combat training classes. He has a Bachelors of Science degree majoring in Biology. He is a certified law enforcement instructor in several areas of law enforcement. He was an assistant coach for the Geneseo High School wrestling team. He has given presentations and training to law enforcement groups, school faculty and students, local community groups, and has been a guest speaker at numerous events.
We have teamed up to teach Basic Pistol, Illinois Concealed Carry, Advanced Shooting classes, and 3+hr Mandatory Concealed Carry Re-certification to interested citizens wanting to learn about shooting a handgun and qualify for their concealed carry license. You will have both of our expertise at your disposal as we work with you as a team in acquiring your concealed carry permit. You will never be just a number when working with us, we will help you succeed in accomplishing your goal and have fun doing so. We emphasize safety and mind-set and will show you how to train going forward offering our many years of experience and expertise of real-world situations. We will give you real-life perspectives on what to expect when carrying concealed and help you prepare mentally for possible future encounters. We take pride in knowing that when you walk out the door from our training, you are fully aware of the law, safety, and liability of being a responsible concealed gun carrier.
We are all from Henry County and our classroom and range is located in Colona, IL off of Wolf Road/Cleveland Road close to the I-80 exit with easy access to the Quad Cities and surrounding area (Click on the Tab at the top of the page for exact Location and Directions). We are both dedicated to giving you professional, up-to-date and current training. We will make sure that you not only know the laws governing concealed carry, but will know your rights as a gun owner.

We are offering an Advanced Handgun Shooting class for those that want extra training. This is a 4.5+ hour/one day class. If you want to learn how to be a better shooter, and especially on the move, this class is for you. A little class time and a lot of range time...use of cover, shooting platform, close quarter combat, tactical movement, etc. will all be covered. Check out the dates and get signed up!
